How does a dentist remove an impacted tooth?

Wisdom teeth extraction can be done with local anaesthesia. To remove the impacted tooth, an incision is made in your gums, so the infected teeth and jawbone can be reached. If your teeth are fully impacted and buried deep within your gums or jawbone, it might be harder for your surgeon to remove them than if they've broken through the gum. The entire surgery usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes. You will normally be able to go home the same day.

Sutures are placed in the area of surgery to minimize post-operative bleeding and to help to heal. Sometimes the sutures disintegrate early or are dislodged. This is no cause for alarm, simply remove the suture form your mouth and discard it. The sutures will dissolve or be removed approximately one week after surgery. The removal of sutures requires no anaesthesia or needles. The procedure takes only a minute or so, and there is minimal discomfort associated with this procedure.
